Waco Riverwalk Extension

Waco Riverwalk trail winding along the river
SIZE:

1.2 miles

Client:

City of Waco

The Waco Riverwalk is a beautiful multi-use trail that stretches along the Brazos River, running near the heart of Waco, Texas. The City of Waco has created this trail network spanning both sides of the Brazos River, Texas’s longest river. Halff was honored to work on this important project and was responsible for the design of 1.2 miles of 10-foot-wide, ADA-compliant concrete hike/bike trail per a TxDOT TEA-21 grant.

Many requirements needed to be met from AASHTO, the City of Waco and TxDOT regarding size, alignment, and pavement markings and location. Construction plan development included plan/profile sheets detailing horizontal and vertical alignments, grading plans, drainage improvements (including five culvert crossings and a “no adverse impact” analysis), retaining walls, lighting and conduit, and specifications. Additional project items also contributed to the overall look and feel of the finished project, including:

  • signal and island improvements at Herring Avenue
  • a 2,300-square-yard parking lot
  • a prefabricated pedestrian bridge with abutments
  • a pavilion, trailhead, and park appurtenances
  • irrigation and landscaping

As part of the trail, Halff designed several overlooks as special amenities for residents and visitors to enjoy the historic river. The 1.2-mile stretch of trail designed and built by Halff begins at Brazos Park East and ends at the intersection of Herring Avenue and MLK Boulevard, connecting with the nearest trail to the east. Brazos Park East is a new park featuring boat ramps, docks, fishing, horseshoe pits, a pavilion and scenic views. The Waco Riverwalk Extension Project has been a wonderful addition to the existing trail, further connecting people and the community to the wonderful outdoor space.
